The Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT) is a railway tunnel connecting Austria to Italy. It starts in Innsbruck and ends 55kms further at Franzenfeste. If the Innsbruck bypass into which it runs out, is added, the Alp-throughfare has a total length of 64 kilometers – making this the world’s largest underground railway connection.
This construction phase, to the value of 380 million Euro was awarded in the Summer of 2014 to the Strabag/Salini-Impregilo joint venture. During September 2014, the works already started and is planned to end early 2019. This phase furthermore includes the demolition of approximately 38 kilometers of existing tunnel track.
